How it works
Quilt width = mattress width + 2 × drop
Quilt length = mattress length + drop (foot) + pillow tuck
The drop is how far the quilt hangs over the side of the mattress. A modern mattress is 10–14" deep, so a 12–15" drop just covers it. For a quilt that hides the box spring or reaches the floor, measure from the top of the mattress to where you want it to stop.
A pillow tuck is extra length that folds under and over the pillows, usually about 10". Leave it out if the quilt will sit below the pillows.
Quilting shrinks a top by about 2–5% (more with dense quilting or cotton batting washed after quilting). Make the top a little bigger if the finished size matters. The quilt sizes guide walks through a full example.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the old bedspread instead of the mattress. Measure the bed itself, including its depth.
- Using a chart without knowing its drop. A “queen quilt” can mean anything from 80×90 to 90×108.
- Forgetting shrinkage from quilting and washing.
